A Very Hands-On Way of One of the Corporal Works of Mercy Feeding the Hungry.<\/p>\n
The Sunday lunch program started at the request of the Rochester Ministerial Association. They asked if the 6 Catholic churches in Rochester could offer a free meal to the needy at noon on Sundays, since there were no free meals offered on Sundays. The 6 churches rotate cooking, serving, and cleaning up each Sunday at St. Francis Catholic Church. The Sunday closest to the main holidays each year are considered “all parishes” Sundays, which mean each parish contributes 2 volunteers and a dessert.<\/p>\n
One of the trained coordinators works with the various volunteers for the holiday meal. Each Sunday each parish needs 10-12 volunteers from about 10:30-1:15 to cook, serve, and clean up from serving the 40-80 guests. Some of our guests are homeless, some are low income and some come for the fellowship. We don’t ask for proof of need.<\/p>\n
We meet monthly as coordinators to discuss the last month’s lunches and plan for the next month. Some of our food comes from Channel-One and some is purchased from Sam’s Club, as needed. Each coordinator chooses what to prepare; choosing from food in the Sunday lunch refrigerator and freezer at St. Francis. Volunteers are always needed and welcome and new coordinators would be most welcome!!! It doesn’t work well for young children to help.
