The Dorothy Day Hospitality House is a temporary homeless shelter conveniently located in downtown Rochester, Minnesota within walking distance to Mayo Clinic, buses and community resources. The house is open from 4 PM to 9 AM and closed from 9 AM to 4 PM; 365 days a year.

The donors and volunteers of the Dorothy Day Hospitality House, embrace the principles of dignity, self-respect, and a positive appreciation of life. Like Dorothy Day herself, we value humans, both individually and collectively. We endeavor to meet each Guest’s need for survival and personal development, while always respecting the Guest’s right to privacy. We believe we are responsible for one another and come together as a hopeful people out of various faiths, ministries, and occupations to provide a sense of community and caring. It is of utmost importance for their Guests and their volunteers to create and share a nurturing, pleasant environment.

Our funding is entirely made up of private donations. their volunteers receive no payment other than the priceless gift of being able to help out during a Guest’s time of need.

The Dorothy Day Hospitality House is staffed exclusively by volunteers. Therefore, we are always looking for individuals and groups who enjoy making a difference. Volunteering at the House provides opportunities for meeting and working with many interesting and wonderful people in a warm environment. Whatever talents or gifts you or your group has to offer, we look forward to meeting and working with you. An individual or group can volunteer at the Dorothy Day Hospitality House once a month or more, as it fits one’s schedule.

Our primary volunteer opportunity for individuals is their Front Desk volunteers. Front Desk volunteers manage guest registrations, mingle with their guests, provide hospitality to the homeless, and help their guests with other needs. We need volunteers to help us at least every other week at the front desk during any of the following shifts: 7-9 am, 4-7 pm, and 7-9:30 pm
