Food for Friends Ministry

Connecting people in need with those who can help

Food for Friends ministry, also known as the backpack program, began in 2012. Our parish was asked to work in partnership with Channel One and Ben Franklin School in providing a backpack of food for those in need once a week.Fast forwarding to 2018, Ben Franklin is a school with 70% of their students on free or reduced lunch program. The Food for Friends ministry is a program where families sign up to receive a food bag each week. This program packs food bags for about 100-120 students each week.Church of the Resurrection parishioners also contribute non perishable foods to keep a food shelf supplied at the school.

The FFF ministry also supports the purchase of tennis shoes, snow boots, snow pants, and winter coats.

Special projects also take place. This parish has gone above and beyond in helping fill about 120 back packs with school supplies (all distributed) on a yearly basis. We have done a collection of books, made and filled cloth bags with personal hygiene items, crafted quilts and fleece blankets to give to those participating in the program and have a need for warmth.

Food for Friends also is a designated ministry during Almsgiving. This is a one time opportunity for parishioners to sign up to help with their time and talents, or to give dollar support. On average we supply 20-30 coats, snow pants, and snow boots throughout a winter. We purchase tennis shoes. Socks and underwear are needed for the nurse’s office. Emergencies come up and we may help with extra groceries, laundry soap or home cleaning products.

The Principal, school social worker, and a family liaison employee at the school, are involved in with this program in requesting the needs of individuals, and decision making.
